There are free shuttle buses planned to take you between the various participating institutes, and you can find a full list of the exhibitions on the website or check out the TV commercial (German):

Remember that the AAC doesn’t have any formal committee or benevolent dictator to organise things: if you fancy doing something on the list, and see that other people are interested, just sent an email to the mailing list to get the ball rolling. Or come to a Stammtisch and let us know your ideas and plans!

So please tick as many items as interest you in the poll below. We’ll keep it open until we have enough results If there are other things you’d like to take part in, or help organise, that are not on the list – please get in touch!

I don’t have time/energy to deal with them one-by-one, or to reserve books etc. and yet would prefer that they found good homes.So if anyone is interested, we’ll be having an “open house” this Saturday, 3rd March, between 13h and 14h – just email for the address!

Update 07/03/2012: there are still books available – I will be bringing a few to the Stammtisch each week, or you are interested you can get in touch and arrange to collect some!

You can find the list of organised trips here, which include skiing and organised snowshoe tours. For the former, ski equipment can usually be hired at the resort, and for the snowshoe hikes Gigasport offer to rent the shoes for €5.

Remember that if you want to get a group together to join one of these tours, or organise something yourself, you can always send an email to the AAC mailing list, or drop by a Stammtisch!

We will drive first to Buschenschank Franz Zach. For those interested, there will be a “hash” (a social walk/run/drink – see here) as well! If you want to take part in the hash, make sure you bring some suitable footwear since it will likely be “off road”!

At 17:30 we will drive on to Buschenschank Lazarus and sample their wares, and those of other local Buschenschank. We will depart at 21.00 for Graz, arriving at about 21:30, ready for more “local” drinking

The bus holds 50 people, and the trip will cost €10 per person – someone will be collecting names and money at the next few Stammtische! If you are interested in joining us, but can’t make it to a Stammtisch, let us know and we can arrange to get the money another way/time/place. Space are limited by the size of the bus, and will be allocated on a “first come” basis to those who give us money!!

There are often bicycle lanes marked on the streets, and cyclists can often cycle both ways down one-way streets (look for “ausgenommen Radfahrer”, meaning “except for bicycles” below a one-way or no-entry sign). These is a free map available showing all of the bicycle routes in the city – ask at the Tourist Information or at Mobil Zentral, just off Jakominiplatz. There is also an online version!

Several local and long-distance bicycle routes exist in Graz – in the city you will see signs marked “HR7″ for example – this means Stadt-Hauptradweg 7. Graz also lies on the Murradweg (Mur bicycle route), a long distance route that follows the river Mur from its source to Bad Radkersburg. This is marked as the “R2″.

Second hand bicycles can be found in various shops around the city – for example Rebikel or Bicycle, and the large sports shops such as Hervis, Gigasport or Intersport stock bikes (although they are often not terribly knowledgeable). Even supermarkets such as InterSpar and Hofer often have some good deals!

Finally, if you do get a bicycle please take care around trams and tram tracks! If you are not used to them, try to cross the tracks at a sharp angle – it seems obvious, but even the more experienced riders have a few tales to tell! Also, you should be aware that the police can and do stop cyclists if they are cycling drunk, have no lights, or are cycling through the Herrengasse or Stadtpark – you have been warned!

Every route with a single digit number is a tram, double digits are buses and triple digit services run outside the city. So each service with a number under 99 is a local service (zone 101) and these can be used with a single zone ticket, which are valid for one hour (Stundenkarte), 24 hours and more. You can buy these from ticket machines on trams and from bus drivers. It’s also possible to buy strips of 10 tickets (10-Zonen-Karte) from a Trafik, which are a little cheaper.

A useful website with movie listing for graz is uncut.at, which also lists all of the cinemas. The KIZ Royalkino was formerly an exclusively English language theatre called the Royal English Cinema, but now caters for a slightly broader audience with films in several languages, including English. It’s not the most modern cinema, but it has a cozy feel.

At the other extreme, the large Cineplexx theatre is rather modern, with an IMAX screen as well, but typically only shows English language movies in their original form on Tuesday evenings. It’s also a little further out of town, but directly on tram line 5.
