Zotter chocolate trip report

Despite the last minute change of pickup point due to the Graz Marathon, we had a fun trip to the Zotter chocolate factory on Saturday 13th October. At the final headcount we were 44 people in total – thanks for all of you for making it a success!

You can find a few photos from the trip below – if you have others you would like to add to this collection, then please let us know!

UPDATE: new meeting point for the Zotter trip!!

Due to the Graz Marathon taking place on Sunday, Franz-Graf-Allee (our original meeting point), will be closed to traffic. We will now be meeting on Griesplatz, near the bus stop for regional bus 691. See the map here. We are departing at 14:15, so please be there in plenty of time. If you have questions, contact us on +43 699 104 29 047.

The AAC is making a day trip to the Zotter chocolate factory on Saturday 13th October. We have hired a bus and will leave Graz at 14:15, arriving at about 15:00 for the introductory video and self-guided tour (download the app!) – including many, many tasting opportunities 😉

You can read more about the Zotter tour, which lasts about 2 hours. Afterwards we plan to either visit Riegersburg Castle to walk off some calories and have a drink, or visit a local Buschenschank for some Sturm, and arrive back in Graz at about 20:15.

The bus and tour have been booked for 30 people, and we need to fill all places to keep the price down, so please sign up and tell all your friends about it! The cost will be €25 including the bus hire and a day-ticket to Zotter – discounts for children as below. You can pay at a Stammtisch, via PayPal (with credit card, no account needed) or bank transfer (please email for details), or contact us to make other arrangements!

In summary:

Date: Saturday 13th October
Pickup: 14.00, Griesplatz, bus stop by Mariensäule (regional Linie 691)
Return: 20:15, as for pickup
Cost: €25 for bus hire and day-ticket to Zotter

To pay by credit card, please use the PayPal option below – and remember to fill out an email address or phone number so we can contact you afterwards!

Update Wed 10th October: thanks for all your interest! We expanded the original booking from 30 to over 40, but need final numbers now, so reservations are closed. If you are still interested, please contact us with a contact telephone number, and we will add you to a reserve list, should anyone drop out on the day!

[POLL] Trip to the Zotter chocolate factory

The AAC is planning to hire a bus for a trip to the Zotter chocolate factory. To organise this, we need to have an idea of dates and numbers. We should allow ~ 1 hour for the bus trip, and the Zotter tour lasts about 2.5 hours. So if you’re interested, and please let us know which date(s) work for you in the poll below:

When should we go to the Zotter chocolate factory?

The Zotter tour costs €11.40 and hiring a bus for 30 people and 6 hours costs around €13 per person, so our estimate is €25 for the trip. Also, it would be useful to know if you just want to visit the chocolate factory, or also Riegersburg castle, a Buschenschank etc. Of course these options mean keeping the bus for longer, and paying a bit more, but it could be fun – it’s your call:

Should we also go somewhere else?

Any questions, get in touch! Once we have a clear winner for dates, we’ll start collecting definite names and money at the Stammtisch, and if numbers are short open the invitation to other groups in Graz.

Finally, please pass this information and poll on to anyone you think might be interested – the more the merrier!

Summer sun = Stammtische on the terrace!

Now that the good weather is here, the Stammtische will often start off on the terrace at Die Herzl and move inside later. So if you can’t find us (or didn’t know Die Herzl has a terrace!), ask the staff or follow the “Terrasse” sign just inside the entrance!

Long Night of Research

Later this week, the doors of Austria’s universities and research institutions will be opened to the public for the Lange Nacht der Forschung (the Long Night of Research). In Graz alone there are 20 locations and 177 “stations” planned, ranging from hands on experiments to displays and “Ask a scientist” sessions.

There are free shuttle buses planned to take you between the various participating institutes, and you can find a full list of the exhibitions on the website or check out the TV commercial (German):

Sei Neugierig – Entecke Technik – Erlebe Forschung – see you there!

What should AAC do – poll results

As you may have seen, we recently ran a poll to see what people want AAC to do (organise trips etc.). The poll is now closed, but here are the results:

  • Day hiking / cycling trips around Graz (18%, 27 Votes)

  • Day trip to the Zotter chocolate factory (14%, 21 Votes)

Remember that the AAC doesn’t have any formal committee or benevolent dictator to organise things: if you fancy doing something on the list, and see that other people are interested, just sent an email to the mailing list to get the ball rolling. Or come to a Stammtisch and let us know your ideas and plans!

What would you like to see AAC do?

Poll boxA few people at recent Stammtische have suggested things they would like to do in and around Graz. Since some things are easier/nicer to do in groups (e.g. hire a bus to go to the Zotter chocolate factory), we thought it would be good to get some idea of what people are interested in.

So please tick as many items as interest you in the poll below. We’ll keep it open until we have enough results 🙂 If there are other things you’d like to take part in, or help organise, that are not on the list – please get in touch!

English book giveaway

As part of getting rid of the dead tree in my life, I have a number (approx. 100) English books to give away – mostly fiction (sci-fi, thriller, etc.), some travel (guidebooks and travel fiction), and a few other bits and pieces.

I don’t have time/energy to deal with them one-by-one, or to reserve books etc. and yet would prefer that they found good homes. So if anyone is interested, we’ll be having an “open house” this Saturday, 3rd March, between 13h and 14h – just email for the address!

Update 07/03/2012: there are still books available – I will be bringing a few to the Stammtisch each week, or you are interested you can get in touch and arrange to collect some!

Winter sports

Snoeshow tourNow the snow has finally arrived, perhaps you want to get out and experience it? For those who don’t have skis, showshoes and easy access to the mountains, consider the day trips organised by Gigasport!

You can find the list of organised trips here, which include skiing and organised snowshoe tours. For the former, ski equipment can usually be hired at the resort, and for the snowshoe hikes Gigasport offer to rent the shoes for €5.

Remember that if you want to get a group together to join one of these tours, or organise something yourself, you can always send an email to the AAC mailing list, or drop by a Stammtisch!
